A visitor visa, officially called a Temporary Resident Visa, is the document that lets you travel to Canada temporarily to see family, tour, or attend short business meetings. Even with a valid visa, a border services officer still makes the final call on your entry, so understanding what this document actually does, and doesn't, matters before you apply.
A visitor visa is an official document placed in your passport, showing that you meet the requirements to travel to Canada as a foreign national for a temporary purpose. It’s sometimes called a tourist visa in everyday conversation, but there’s no actual legal difference. Temporary Resident Visa, TRV, visitor visa, and tourist visa all describe the same document issued by the Government of Canada.
Most visitor visas are multiple entry, letting you travel to and from Canada repeatedly for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each individual stay is normally capped at six months unless a border services officer authorizes something different when you actually arrive.
Whether you need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization depends on your nationality and how you’re travelling.
Citizens of visa-required countries generally need a TRV to fly to, enter, or transit through Canada. Citizens of visa-exempt countries generally need only an eTA when arriving by air. US citizens and lawful permanent residents of the US typically need neither document at all.
There’s a genuine middle ground worth knowing about. Citizens of certain visa-required countries can apply for an eTA instead of a full visa if they meet three conditions together, they’ve held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid US nonimmigrant visa, they’re coming for a short visit of up to 6 months, and they’re arriving by air. This conditional eligibility has also expanded recently, as of May 26, 2026, citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia meeting certain requirements became newly eligible for an eTA instead of a visitor visa.
A visitor visa authorizes travel to a Canadian port of entry, where a border services officer makes the actual decision on your admission. Holding a valid visa doesn’t guarantee entry on its own, since the officer assesses your stated purpose and intent at that moment.
What it doesn’t allow is just as important. A visitor visa doesn’t let you work or study in Canada. If you’re coming to work, you need a work permit instead, and if you’re coming to study a program longer than six months, you generally need a study permit. Both are handled separately from the visitor category, since each carries its own eligibility and application path.
Item | Detail |

These figures reflect IRCC’s fee list confirmed as of April 30, 2026. Confirm the exact amount at canada.ca before you pay, since fees are adjusted periodically.
Processing time isn’t one number, whatever a single average figure might suggest. As of September 2026, IRCC’s own country-specific data shows a real range from about 9 to 11 days for some countries up to 140 to 157 days for others, depending entirely on where you’re applying from and current application volumes.
Applying for a new visitor visa from inside Canada currently runs about 11 days. Here’s the detail that catches people off guard. Extending an existing stay through a Visitor Record is a different process, not a faster version of the same application. Current Visitor Record processing sits at roughly 310 to 410 days, well over a year. Assuming an extension moves at anything close to your original visa’s speed is a genuine planning mistake worth avoiding.
Check your nationality and travel method against current requirements before starting anything, since applying for the wrong document is a common, avoidable delay.
Use the checklist above, and confirm every detail matches across every document you submit.
Submit online through the IRCC portal and pay the visa fee, plus biometrics if required.
Paying the biometrics fee alongside your application typically gets you the instructions letter within 24 hours rather than waiting longer for it separately.
Overstaying is a genuine, serious problem, not a technicality. It can lead to a removal order, real difficulty returning to Canada afterward, and it can affect future visa applications elsewhere too, since other countries sometimes ask about immigration history. If you’ve already overstayed, applying for restoration of status within 90 days of your authorized stay expiring is the real path back, though it’s not guaranteed and comes with its own conditions.
Visiting your children or grandchildren for an extended stay generally falls under the Super Visa rather than a standard visitor visa, since it allows longer stays specifically for that relationship. Our Family Sponsorship page covers the Super Visa’s requirements in full.
If you’re a permanent resident whose PR card expired while you were outside Canada, a visitor visa isn’t the right document at all, permanent residents are never issued a TRV. You need a Permanent Resident Travel Document instead, and our PR Card Renewal page covers what that process actually involves.
A client came to Brightlight already planning to extend an approved visit to attend a family event several months out, assuming the extension would process in a similar timeframe to her original visa application.
Brightlight walked her through the real current Visitor Record timeline, well over a year in many cases, and helped her restructure her travel plans around a fresh visitor visa application instead, timed properly against the actual event date rather than an extension that wouldn’t have arrived in time.
No immigration consultant can guarantee a visitor visa will be approved, or that a border services officer will admit you even with a valid one. What Brightlight guarantees is an accurate application, honest guidance on realistic timelines, and careful preparation so your file gives an officer no reason to hesitate.

It depends heavily on your country of application. As of September 2026, processing ranges from about 9 to 11 days for some countries up to 140 to 157 days for others. Applying from inside Canada currently runs about 11 days. These figures update regularly, so confirm the current estimate for your specific country before making travel plans.
A visitor visa, or TRV, is required for citizens of visa-required countries and is placed in your passport. An eTA is a simpler electronic document for citizens of visa-exempt countries arriving by air, costing $7 CAD. Some travellers from visa-required countries can also qualify for an eTA instead if they meet specific conditions.
No. A visitor visa authorizes travel to a Canadian port of entry, but a border services officer makes the actual admission decision when you arrive. The officer assesses your stated purpose, your ties to home, and your intent to leave at the end of your visit, regardless of how strong your visa application was.
Most visitors are authorized for up to six months per visit. A border officer can grant a shorter or longer period, noted directly in your passport or on a separate document if it differs from six months. If no specific date is stamped, six months from your entry date applies.
Yes, through a Visitor Record application, but this is a genuinely different and much slower process than your original visa, currently taking 310 to 410 days as of 2026. Apply well before your authorized stay ends, and plan around this realistic timeline rather than assuming an extension moves quickly.
A refusal isn't necessarily permanent. Common reasons include insufficient funds, weak home country ties, or inconsistent documentation. Reviewing the specific refusal reason against your original application usually shows what to strengthen before reapplying, rather than resubmitting the same file unchanged and expecting a different result.
